Curriculum Enrichment at Ferham Primary School

Providing life-experience to facilitate personal development is at the heart of our curriculum enrichment offer.  Personal development is a golden thread of our mission as a school.

Educational Visits 

Closing the gap between the experiences of more advantaged peers nationally is the driving force behind our fully funded educational visits for every year.  Each visit is carefully chosen to bring learning to life or to provide them with experiences that they would otherwise not have.   

FS1 

White Post Farm (to school) 

As our children learn about mini beasts they will be able to get hands-on with some from the comfort of their very own school.  

FS2 

Tropical Butterfly House 

To round of their learning about gardens, our F2 visit a tropical Butterfly House to see all the creatures and features that they have learned about.   

Y1 

Weston Park Museum 

Weston Park Museum is a local museum with an array of exhibitions related to Toys Over Time, one of their History topics.  The visit is timed to take place in the middle in the topic in order that children have some prior knowledge on which to build whilst providing real examples on which to base the rest of their learning. “Do you remember..... as Weston Park?”” is often heard.  

Y2 

The Deep 

The Deep, Hull, is often our children’s first experience of the ocean and all of its creatures. The visit is timed to take place in the middle of topics about Planet Earth and Habitats; this visit it perfectly times to revisit previous learning and to provide a context for what is to come. The penguins and rays are always a hit.  

Y3 

The National Coal Mining Museum 

The National Coal Mining Museum provides the first-hand experience of a local industry of the past in the area in which the children now live.  The visit is timed to take place part way through the topic in order that children have some prior knowledge on which to build whilst providing real examples on which to base the rest of their learning.  

Y4 

Tropical World 

Tropical World, Leeds, is as close to the Amazon as we can get our children while they learn about the Geography, eco-systems and importance of the Amazon Rainforest.  The visit is timed to take place in the middle of these topics to revisit previous learning and to provide a context for what is to come. The humidity, the birds overhead and the scorpions at eye-level are not easily forgotten by our children. 

Y5 

Jorvik 

Jorvik, York, Eboracum, is a trip back to the past which offers an immersive experience never to be forgotten.  The visit is timed to take place November to help to make the links between their two concurrent History topics – Anglo-Saxons and Scots then Vikings.  

Y6 

Yorkshire Sculpture Park 

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, provides an introduction to the world of Art – appreciation and opportunities - as our children prepare to move on to secondary school 

 

 

 

Charitable Endeavours

Many of our families benefit from the support of local charities; we in turn fundraise to support local charities in order that our pupils learn their role within the community.   

Shiloh 

Our Year 5 pupils choose a suitable enterprise to raise funds for this important local charity at Christmas and bring this to fruition.  

Sam’s Army’s Mission 

Linked to our contextual safeguarding, this year we are fund raising to support this local charity to install a water rope at the local canal to safeguard our community. 

Doctor Ted 

Our Year 6 pupils choose a suitable enterprise to raise funds for our local hospital and bring this to fruition. 

 

Extra-curricular Clubs 

The promotion of active lifestyles is important to us: sporting activities are a significant part of our extra-curricular offer.  Pupil voice and Trust competitions shape our offer with clubs for Key Stage Two and Key Stage One including: 

• Football 

• Hockey 

• Dance 

• Tchoukball 

We want to make sure all children can participate in our extra-curricular club offer so other clubs include Choir,  Art, Knitting, Cooking, Sewing and Skiff Band. 

 

Cultural Celebrations For All To Enjoy

Hallowe’en 

This is one of the first events of the school’s celebration calendar and it is much loved as classes take part in the Great Ferham Pumpkin Carve Off as well as a spooky poetry recital.   

Mikulas 

On the 6th of December we celebrate a Roma/Slovak/Czech tradition as Mikulas and his devil and angel visit each class to be impressed before deciding whether to leave treats or coal.  We have sung to him in Czech and also using Makaton. 

Christmas 

We celebrate a traditional, British Christmas with Turkey lunch, Christmas carols and party. 

Pancake Day 

Mr Wolf’s Pancakes are not always the best ones as our EYFS pupils make their own. 

Ramadan 

An exciting time of year for our Muslim pupils and staff is enjoyed by the whole school.  Ramadan customs such as Dhuhr and Iftar with dates are combined with more modern traditions such as our Ramadan calendars for the countdown to Eid. 

Eid 

The ultimate celebration for our Muslim pupils and staff becomes a celebration for the whole school as we eat and party together.
