Early Years Foundation Stage at Ferham Primary School

Welcome to our EYFS page. At Ferham we provide afternoon places for children from 2 years old. The term after their third birthday they will be offered a morning place during which our ‘Rising Threes’ and ‘Foundation Stage One’ children attend.

They will then move into ‘Foundation Stage Two’ the September after their 4th birthday. Children wanting to attend our Foundation Stage Two class need to apply through the Rotherham Local Authority Website (applications usually open in the September the year before they are due to start).

Our vision in EYFS is to ensure children have a happy and positive start to their education where they feel safe and part of a community. We strive to deliver the best care and curriculum that enables each child to reach their full potential.
We do this by creating a safe and nurturing environment that feels like a ‘family’. We want all children to feel like they belong so they are able to thrive.
We want children to develop a love for learning and enquiring minds. We want our families to feel valued in the knowledge we recognise they are their child’s first and foremost educator.

Our Curriculum in the EYFS has been carefully planned to reflect our community, to offer core experiences and to develop a love for books.

Progression grids have been developed to ensure planning identifies the skills and knowledge we want our children to develop from our youngest two year olds to the end of EYFS and makes links with Key Stage One.

In the EYFS our Curriculum is centred around developing a love for books. Stories, Non-fiction, Poetry, Songs and Rhymes are at the heart of everything we do. As well as the diverse books planned for in our Medium Term Overviews we have our ‘Terrific Twelve’ books.

These are special books the children learn by heart and enjoy reading over and over again. The children are encouraged to retell the stories using story maps (Talk For Writing). These books often have repetitive language or are books that have been recommended by the class before as firm favourites!

We also have our ‘Super Six’ which are rhymes we learn over the year and return to. The children learn actions to accompany them. We also have our ‘Core Rhymes’ that we sing daily.

We believe that you are your child’s first educator and we value the importance of working together with you.

Here are some things that you can do at home to support your child:

• Read a bedtime story with your child every night and talk about the pictures together. We have a library you can access regularly in both Nursery and Foundation Stage Two.

You could also visit the local library together.

For our younger EYFS children who attend Nursery in the afternoon, you could attend ‘Weekly Rhyme Time’ at Riverside Library. This is every Wednesday 10.30-11am.

• Talk to your child lots in the house, when out and about. There are some useful top tips on the Tiny Talkers website:

You can also follow Tiny Talkers on Facebook. They have lots of competitions running offering great prizes!

At Clifton Museum they regularly run ‘Nelson’s Cub Club’:

You can find out more information about this on the Clifton Museum Facebook Page.

• Encourage your child to become independent. Here are some things you can do to help your child to be ready for attending Nursery and School:

We will post regular updates about our learning on our class Dojo pages and give you ideas on how you can support your child further at home.
